Amy

Hello, my name is Amy! I use she/her pronouns.

My story

I immigrated to South Australia in 2013 with my parents and little sister. I come from a massive family, so it took some adjusting getting used to it being us four. I love my life in Australia and it's given me the opportunity to do many cool things in my youth - such as try popular Aussie sports and volunteer as a lifeguard on SA beaches!

I am a social work student who's very passionate about a person's well-being and the impact empathy has in building meaningful connections. Human connection grounds me, and I enjoy listening to people and knowing their story. From a young age, I have been a deeply emotional person and felt things intensely, both the good and bad. Through this, I found my passion for mental health. It's ongoing journey for myself and for myself and many of us, and I have a desire for people to acknowledge that vulnerability is a strength, and sharing our experiences fosters connection and reduces stigma.

Why Bright Star?

I was a retail worker for 6 years, and through studying social work, decided to put myself out there and try something that aligned with my studies and passion for human connection.

Becoming a support worker at Bright Star has been a rewarding decision both professionally, and more importantly, personally. I love the clients I get to work with, as well as my colleagues. I strive to ensure my personal and professional growth aligns with my values and goals, and my leadership team ensures that whenever I need guidance, they offer it. This allows me to thrive in the everchanging environment that accompanies support work.

What are my likes?

My hobbies and interests vary! I am a foodie and love to cook, be with nature, listen to music and attend live gigs, and do anything hands on.

A special interest of mine is commercial airliners!

I am a very curious person who enjoys exploring new experiences; so long as I'm present with myself, I enjoy most things, and the small moments life has to offer.

What does my work look like?

My days at Bright Star are diverse, some things I may do in a day are: supporting clients with independent daily living skills, transport, advocacy and community connection, emotional supports, and achieving NDIS goals. With some of the families and younger clients we will play and go on family outings together.

One thing that stays the same every day at Bright Star, is that myself and the other support workers are always client-focused and ensure that any needs they may have are met.
