Alyssa
Hey! I'm Alyssa, I'm a creative who is openly queer and autistic. I vibe with all pronouns, though I mostly use she/they.
My story
I'm the oldest of 6 kids, so I'd say I'm from a big family. My first little brother passed away from SIDS when I was young and I remember him all the time. The rest of my amazing siblings arrived soon after him! I love them a lot and we are all very close. My siblings inspire me to love without limits and be courageous.
I was raised as a Christian and I once embarked on a mission trip to the Philippines with my church group. It was an amazing experience that I wouldn't change for anything, even though I'm no longer Christian. This experience opened my eyes and gave me the chance to truly connect with some amazing communities. I'd say that the people I met there sparked my passion for uplifting others. They also showed me what compassion looks like in action.
I've had my share of difficult moments, including mental health struggles and a bumpy autism journey. I like to use my artworks and stories to connect with others and empower them in their own lives. I aspire to advocate and contribute to building supportive communities for others like me.
Why Bright Star?
There are so many reasons I choose to work for Bright Star. The biggest reason is that Bright Star’s values and mission align perfectly with my personal values and life goals. I spent some years working for various NDIS plan management businesses before I came to Bright Star. I was good at it, but plan management just wasn’t me.

I am a people person, and I love uplifting and mentoring others. Bright Star offered me an opportunity to get back to what I love, in a community I care about, and I took that offer in a heartbeat.
What are my likes?
How long do you have? I like so many things!!

At the top of my list would be: abstract watercolour painting, polymer clay sculpting, cooking, reading, geology, and bees. My favourite band of all time is Bring Me The Horizion. I don't think I ever left my teenage emo-phase, frankly.

While I have my favourites, I still enjoy trying new things and learning in the moment. I will always keep an open mind in case there's something else I like, just waiting for me to discover it.
What does my work look like?
I do all sorts of things at Bright Star! I usually work on business projects and continuous improvement. At other times I do onboarding, graphic design, and research. On occasion, I can be a go-to person for ideas or advice. I work closely with the other leaders at Bright Star and we all support each other to make Bright Star a great business. I love our little team, especially the genuine compassion and heart that each of our leaders bring.
