Elah

Hiya! My name is Elah and I use she/her pronouns.

My story

I have been volunteering and working in Autistic-led community programs since I was 14, doing one-on-one mentoring since I was 16, and started working as a support worker in 2022. During this time I have learnt so much about myself and others' neurodivergency.

My passion in Autism and understanding the way people think and feel has led me to studying the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Flinders Uni. I am excited to someday work as a psychologist in the intersection between mental health and disability.

Why Bright Star?

I value working at Bright Star, first and foremost because they are Autistic-led and value neuro-affirming support. Their values of compassion and kindness resonate with me, and I love that we are encouraged and expected to take on a holistic approach with our clients and the important people in their lives.

What are my likes?

I am a huge Dungeons and Dragons nerd, and this has led me to my passion project of the Bright Star D&D Program. I'm a big believer in the power of collective storytelling and working together as a group to create something fun, fantastical, and empowering.

Outside of D&D I'm a board game enthusiast, I love to crochet, make art, cook, and I have been known to go on beach walks and come home with a hundred cool rocks and shells!

What does my work look like?

I work as a support worker and therapy assistant, so my day-to-day looks so different for each person I have the pleasure to work with. I have had the privilege to support people in their homes with daily living skills like cooking and cleaning, as well as the opportunity to support out in the community and engage in fun activities like nature adventures and social groups. As the facilitator of the D&D program, I also get the opportunity to create magical worlds and elaborate tales for my players to explore.
