Hayley
Hey hey, my name is Hayley and I am neurodiverse, my pronouns are she/her.
My story
I grew up in a family of 6 as the only girl, which meant I often found ways to have fun by myself. My family moved around a lot and ended up living in Victoria for 9 years. Later, I moved to South Australia with my cousins. The move to SA was the biggest and best thing I had done for myself. I got the fresh start I needed and a new lease on life.
I'm open about my neurodiversity, ADHD. I was diagnosed when I was a teenager, and getting my diagnosis was a huge relief. I finally had an idea of why I struggle with my emotions and impulses, it made me feel like I could give people something that would help them understand me better. Knowing myself and my ADHD allows me to have a deeper understanding and appreciation for others who are neurodiverse too.
Why Bright Star?
When looking for work I came along Bright Star, I was already intrigued with the name and became even more interested in the company when learning about their involvement and love for the community.
I love Bright Star for creating a safe space at the office for the clients as well as their support workers.
What are my likes?
I love both the indoors and outdoors. I love exploring the land and oceans when I'm outdoors, and when I'm not exploring, I'm playing sports with friends or rollerblading the boardwalks. On the other hand, what I love about being indoors is playing board games, Nintendo and PS4 with my mates. My favourite thing to do on my own is PC gaming.
I love to stay grounded by walking around without shoes. I also like to keep myself focused by keeping my hands and mind busy, normally I'll be colouring in while watching my favourite shows.
Lastly, I'm obsessed with everything home design related. I spend my time designing, building, and visiting homes. I will even take a trip around neighbourhoods just to admire the beautiful architecture of the houses.
What does my work look like?
My role at Bright Star is as a support worker, a role that allows me to be face to face with so many unique and different people. A usual work day is getting to learn about my clients' week and any new things they learnt or did. I love that I get to see and hear about their growth and that I have a part in the things that bring them happiness.
