Keelan

Hey, my name is Keelan, I'm 24 and I use she/her pronouns. I enjoy arts & crafts, games and the outdoors.

My story

I grew up in a neurodiverse household. Someone in my family has been an NDIS participant for about 6 years now so I have some lived in experience. I know just how important it is to be open-minded and kind to others. I'm very friendly & down to earth and I enjoy connecting with people. I am about to begin a Bachelor of Disability & Developmental Education after switching from a Bachelor of Science.

One of my parents were born in Papua New Guinea, I am mixed race and proud. I pride myself on inclusion. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.

Why Bright Star?

The first thing that stuck out to me was that Bright Star is an autistic-led and neuro-affirming organisation. I am excited to be a part of a place that aligns with my own personal values and to be a part of a team where everyone feels accepted, understood and supported.

I really enjoy helping others and making a positive difference in people's lives. I've always been drawn to roles and situations where I can support others and build meaningful connections. I'm passionate about empowering others so support work is a great opportunity to do so.

What are my likes?

I'm someone who enjoys dabbling in a bit of everything! In my spare time I enjoy reading and doing arts & crafts. I'm also a big fan of board games or card games - I love a games night with friends or family. I really love getting
immersed in a good film, too.  I also enjoy capturing moments on my film camera - I'm quite a sentimental person and film photos have such a nostalgic look to them.

I've always had a love for the outdoors and find a lot of joy in exploring nature and appreciating its beauty. I recently went to Japan, and I can't wait
to travel to more places and experience different cultures when I can get the chance. I'm always down for anything and find a lot of joy in the simple pleasures of life.

There's not too many things I dislike, but the one thing that sticks out is
seafood.

A sunset.
Me playing with cards.
Going for a walk in the forest.
Spending time with my loved ones in the snow.

What does my work look like?

I'm a support worker so my work looks different every day because everyone has different support needs. I can be someone to talk to, someone to support around the home, and someone you can be yourself around.
